“Over the Fence” (90 Brooches)

Cement, Steel, Brass, Pigment, Resin

Varied Size 1 x 1 x 1 to 3 x 3 x 6 inches

“Over the Fence” consists of over 90 small brooches inspired by the view across the US/ Mexico border into a neighborhood of Juarez Mexico called Anapra.  Anapra is one of the poorest communities within the city of Juarez and as I parked my car for work every day at the University of Texas at El Paso I would have an unobstructed view of the landscape ornamented with these vernacular structures.  The dwellings are squat, built and maintained in state of constant flux and  exemplify pure improvisation which crowds desert mountainside. In the distance the singular homes are painted in bright colors which stand out like gems and decorate the dry desert landscape.  This work embodies the visual and tactile experience I have had with these structures imbedded in the land. As an installation its layers and forms overwhelm and command the land. As wearables these intimate objects coexist and build from the body as a means to connect with the landscape from afar.
